Let’s Get Real
Who I work With
After 15 years of working with fashion brands, I’ve taken notes on who I can best serve as a fashion copywriter. Here’s a checklist of “best case scenario” collaborators:
- You’re a women’s fashion, beauty, skincare or lifestyle brand. For the sake of clarity, fashion is clothing and accessories. Beauty and skincare… well, you know. Lifestyle encompasses things like home furnishings, wellness essentials, and other trending daily-use items (think candles, journals and stationery, et al).
- It’s OK if you offer a range, including menswear and childrenswear.
- You’re seeking a remote cross-channel digital marketing copywriter. A mouthful, I know. It means I only work remotely (no in-office visits) and I (mostly) only work on digital copy projects. This includes website and app copy, email copy, social media bios and captions, and content (such as blogs, editorial platforms, descriptions, et al).
- I do provide creative consulting services for content planning and marketing strategy, so mention that when you reach out if you’re interested.
- If our main collaboration is digital and you’d like me to work on adjacent print materials, it’s possible! Mention this when you reach out.
- Your brand is fully realized. You know your brand’s name, your product is fully developed and ready to launch, and you’re able to communicate your USPs (what makes your stuff special and different). You have some literature to support this, such as a slide deck or brand book.
- It’s OK if you’re pre-launch.
- It’s OK if you’re in the midst of a rebrand or relaunch.
- It’s OK if your brand materials aren’t polished or finalized.
- You know who your target customer is. You know why this particular customer is/will be excited about your product. You know how your product makes their daily life a little bit better or (in the case of seasonal or occasion-related products) how it helps them create unique or special moments.
- It’s OK if you have more than one target customer profile or a demographic range (in fact, this is more realistic).
- It’s OK if you’re not sure yet how this demographic translates to your copy voice.
- You have an idea of the copy tone you aspire to, even if you’re not sure how to label it. You have some keywords (like sophisticated, playful, bold, trustworthy, candid) that sum up the vibe you’d like your copy to embody.
- You (generally) know what your goals are in partnering with a copywriter. You have a sense of phase 1 scope (what we’ll work on first). You have a loose timeline for this first phase, such as when you’d like to kick off and see initial drafts. You might even have a sense of what went “wrong” with your previous copy or where you’d like to improve based on past performance and targets.
- You’re committed to a communicative, proactive collaboration. You’re ready to provide brand materials, context, and assets required to write copy effectively. You answer questions (via email) reasonably quickly if it impacts the project flow. You schedule video calls in advance, so we both have time to find the perfect virtual background (I jest).
- Your brand is actively or aiming to become a positive force in the world in some way, whether through environmental, social, or other initiatives. You’re partnering with organizations who are helping local and/or global communities. You care, and it shows in your operations (not just your About page). There’s no perfect scenario here, I just prefer to work with brands who are future-minded and community-centric.
⚠️ I don’t work with brands/clients who…
- …don’t have a solidified product or brand
- …are looking for branding, rather than copy (I will not name your brand)
- … have no timeline, just want everything “asap”
- …are looking for the cheapest and fastest possible copy solution (that’s a race to the bottom, I promise)
- …have unbalanced communication (not a fan of radio silence or excessive check-ins)
- …have no planet or human-centered initiatives in place (now or within future plans)
If you’re still here, amazing! Let’s dig deeper.
Let’s Get Specific
How I work
My approach to freelance copywriting has evolved a lot over the years. I started out with very little structure, shifted into a bit too much structure, and have now settled into a method that allows for efficient and proactive collaborative energy. My take? I provide my expectations, review yours, and we create an arrangement that satisfies both parties.
I have no shortage of “rules” I’ve drafted over the years in order to protect myself as an independent creative, however, each project is unique and requires a customized approach. I don’t force collaborations into containers that don’t fit. I work in phases, remaining open to adapting as our work together progresses.
While I’m a copywriter by trade, my experience in e-commerce, fashion design and shopping as a millennial has amped up my ability to weigh in on everything from creative strategy to UX and more. I always endeavor to chime in where it’s helpful, offering a bit of gratis consulting along the way.
With that said, here’s what you can expect when we get to work:
The Services
I’m a fashion and lifestyle copywriter. As mentioned above, my ideal collaborations involve women’s fashion and accessories, beauty and skincare, and lifestyle (home, wellness, home fragrance, stationery, and other trending daily-use products).
I write digital copy for cross-channel mediums—and the occasional print lookbook or catalogue. Here’s a summary of the kinds of deliverables I’ll collaborate with you on:
- Website copy (creative copy, UX & SEO copy, customer service copy)
- Product description copy (including meta copy)
- App copy
- Email copy
- Push & SMS copy
- Social media content (bios, captions, on-image copy)
- Blog content
- Editorial content
- Press materials (press releases, collection descriptions)
Don’t see your project on this list? You can contact me using the form at the bottom of this page to see whether I’m available to work on your specific project.
The Process
We’ll dig more into the process of working together once we begin onboarding, but here’s a general breakdown of one-off contract projects:
- First, we’ll hop on a video call to meet one another in-person. We can discuss my background and what I bring to the table, the DNA of your brand, and your specific project needs. These calls are a lot of fun and will help us understand whether we’re a good fit.
- After the call, I’ll send you a questionnaire to fill out. This form helps me get to know your brand on a deeper level. It’ll also help me understand your product’s unique differentiators and your market positioning. You’ll send your brand education materials, if applicable, such as brand books and line sheets.
- I’ll finalize our scope on a Schedule A, putting us on the same page about our first phase of collaboration, including any deadlines. We’ll exchange and sign required paperwork, such as a project agreement and NDA. A deposit will secure the project kick-off.
- The next few steps depend on our specific project, but typically I’ll provide an outline of copy points based on the scope and have you sign off on messaging. Then I’ll begin drafting copy. You’ll receive a streamlined spreadsheet including designated feedback column(s), and provide any feedback before revisions and final delivery.
- Throughout the process, we’ll communicate via email and short video check-ins if necessary. Once you’re happy with the copy, a final delivery is confirmed and the final invoice is dispatched. We’ll discuss the outcome and whether we’d like to continue working together (I’ve been working with some of my clients for 7-10 years in a row).
Of course, this process can vary, but that’s a fairly accurate snapshot of our time together. If you have any questions, be sure to include them when you reach out.
